The Cape Floristic Region (CFR) is one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth. Located at the southwestern tip of South Africa, the unique landscape is home to 9000 different plant species. Among these are the Leucospermums, a form of Protea, known as pincushions. The flowers of the pincushions are produced in dense inflorescences which have large numbers of prominent styles, each thickened at the apex to form the stigma.
During low-light conditions the bright and colourful inflorescences can appear to ‘glow’ against the drab background and resemble fireworks – thus providing the inspiration for this collection of images: Floristic Fireworks.
